Voortrekker leaders Andries Hendrik Potgieter and Gerrit (Gert) Maritz, both Potgieter and Maritz led their troops to Western Transvaal where they attacked Mzilikazi for the Matabele (Ndebele) on the Voortrekkers at Vechtkop (Vegkop), a few kilometres north-east of the present village of Edenville in the Orange Free State.
They started their attack on the Matabele at Mosega on 17 January and drove them back under great losses. Potgieter and Maritz went back to their laagers with a large number of cattle captured by the Matabele warriors at Vechtkop. Mzilikazi was again defeated in various later engagements and fled beyond the Limpopo to the Matopos, in present-day Zimbabwe.
