Four minors aged 16 and 17 have been locked up for the murder of 24-year-old Brendon Tarentaal at Eurekaville township in Noupoort at weekend.
Tarentaal’s body was discovered lying in an open field by a woman who was passing by, ironically on Vrede Street (vrede is Afrikaans for peace).
Police spokesperson Lt Olebogeng Tawana said the police reacted to the woman’s call promptly began investigation at the crime scene.
“The preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased could have been stoned, stabbed and beaten to death. The Noupoort police are investigating a case of murder,” Tawana said.
The incident happened in the early hours of Saturday morning.
“It is alleged the four suspects were drinking at a local tavern in Eurekaville and later an argument flared up between the deceased and the suspects. One of the bouncers at the tavern tried to intervene, by separating them.”
Apparently the suspects, whose names cannot be revealed because of their age, chased Tarentaal out of the tavern until they caught him. Tawana said the incident occurred just before the tavern was closed at 2am, Saturday.
“An autopsy will be conducted by forensics to determine cause of death.”
The suspects appeared before the Noupoort Magistrate’s Court on Monday for murder. A formal bail hearing is to be held on March 18.
Noupoort is located in the eastern Karoo on the Eastern Cape border. It is better known for its drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre, reputed to be the largest in South Africa.
