KwaMashu residents have hailed eThekwini municipality mayor James Nxumalo for living up to his promise to build speed humps along the infamous Ngome road in Section C of the township.
The ward 40 residents, speaking through their representative Mapi Maphisa yesterday, said the mayor had shown he was a man that could be trusted to fulfil his promises. The praise for the mayor came during his visit to the ward to announce that the building of speed humps along the road that has claimed several lives will begin “soon”.
“Thank you for living up to your promise. However, we must state clearly as residents that if no speed humps are built on this killer road, we will shut it down because we are losing our kids as speeding cars hit them and we can’t afford to lose more of them,” Maphisa said.
Besides the human fatalities, speeding vehicles have also resulted in damage to residents’ properties on the road.
Earlier this year, a speeding kombi, which was allegedly racing for passengers against another kombi, skidded off the road and plunged into a house nearby, destroying the structure.
Nxumalo said the city will be installing speed humps not only at KwaMashu but in all areas where residents have demanded them. “The metro recently adopted a resolution to address many community concerns around the metro as soon as possible. One of the decisions was to built speed humps here,” he said.
