Residents of Enkanini in Sun City AA near KwaMhlanga have called on cooperative governance and traditional affairs MEC Madala Masuku’s intervention after the local municipality failed to fix a flooded village street.
The villagers have accused the Thembisile Hani local municipality, led by mayor Ndaweni Mahlangu, of not attending to the problem for over a year. The street, which leads to the infamous Moloto Road, has been flooding and is sometimes impassable due to lack of drainage.
Irate residents said that a few months ago an 11-month-old boy crawled into a pool of water in the street and drowned.
They claim they tried to bring the matter to the attention of ward councillor Jack Masango but their efforts were in vain.
Resident Paulinah Skhosana said residents were planning to donate money and hire a grader to fix the messy street because the municipality was failing them.
“We cannot put our children’s lives in danger. We have no choice but to do something to fix the road,” she said.
Residents said the notorious street was unusable at night as it also lacked street lights.
“We appeal to the provincial authorities to come to our rescue – we have lost hope in the municipality,” said Jerry Mahlangu, another resident.
Councillor Masango referred our enquiries to the municipalty’s head office in Kwaggafontein.
Municipal spokesperson Simphiwe Mashiyane could not be reached for comment on her cellphone. She did not return our messages.
