INTIMIDATION: The New Age reporter in Mpumalanga, France Nyaka, was allegedly assaulted by a Hawks man.
Police in KwaMhlanga, Mpumalanga are investigating a charge of intimidation against a policeman attached to the Hawks in Middelburg for allegedly assaulting and threatening to gun down The New Age journalist, France Nyaka, on Sunday.
The incident allegedly happened at Thandabantu Wholesalers and Supermarket in Phola Park village after Nyaka entered the shop with his camera while investigating suspected corruption among the shop owners and the Hawks man whose name is known to The New Age.
Nyaka received a tip off about an unmarked white Nissan Hardbody bakkie offloading unbranded sealed boxes at the shop. The New Age is in possession of the vehicle’s registration number. The KwaMhlanga police confirmed the vehicle belongs to their headquarters in Nelspruit.
Nyaka said one of the foreign nationals who knew him alerted the policeman to his presence while he was queuing with other customers in the shop. The policeman accused him of breaking the rules because he failed to leave his camera at the parcel counter.
“When I left the counter, the policeman was standing at the door. He asked if I was a journalist and I said yes. He then grabbed me, removed his firearm and threatened to shoot me,” said Nyaka.
Nyaka said that the policeman later followed him and drove off when he saw Nyaka calling the police. He said the policeman’s threat would not stop him uncovering corruption.
