Thousands of Grade 12 pupils and their parents gathered at the University of Free State during the institution's open day on Tuesday.
The pupils were given an insight into university life, academic courses available and the requirements for admission. Vice-chancellor and rector Prof Jonathan Jansen told the more than 5000 pupils UFS "is the jewel of the country".
"Here we take academic standards seriously. Anyone can obtain a degree, but here you can get more than a degree. You get an education," Jansen told the visiting pupils.
He also encouraged them to consider studying in other countries. "You must think out of your comfort zone; have a big heart." – 7011925
