Cop, uncle in cigarette scam bust

Elfas Torerai

A SENIOR police officer was arrested on the eve of the Easter weekend after he was found in possession of illegal cigarettes valued at R135000.

The officer, 43, is a station commander at Swartruggens and was arrested together with his uncle, who is believed to be an accomplice in the cigarettes racket.

Provincial police spokesperson, Brig Thulane Ngubane said three suspects were arrested in two separate incidents involving counterfeit cigarettes in the area.

“On Thursday, an operation was conducted by Crime Intelligence, Organised Crime and Public Order Policing in Swartruggens at about 11pm. Information was followed up, leading the team to a police member’s house in Swartruggens.

“Illegal cigarettes in 27 boxes and 611 loose packets to the value of R135000 were found in the house and the police member and his uncle were both arrested,” he said.

In another incident, Ngubane said another stash of counterfeit cigarettes valued at R30000 was found in a Pakistani-owned tuck-shop in central Rustenburg.

“A tuck shop belonging to a Pakistani citizen was searched as part of disruptive action operations and 136 cartons of illegal cigarettes to the value of R30200 were found inside the tuck shop. The Pakistani national, 28, was also arrested for dealing and possessing illegal goods,” he said.
