England, replying to Sri Lanka's first innings total of 318, were shot out for 193 just before tea on the second day of the first cricket Test in Galle on Tuesday.
Ian Bell top-scored with 52, while left-arm spinner Rangana Herath claimed six wickets for 74 runs.
Sri Lanka lead by 125 runs.
