Ten people were killed and eight admitted to hospital following two serious accidents on the notorious Moloto Road on Saturday night and on Sunday morning.
In the first accident, five people travelling in a double-cab bakkie died and five were seriously injured after the bakkie overturned while overtaking another vehicle at Vlaklaagte No1, Kwaggafontein, near Marble Hall on Saturday night.
The injured were rushed to KwaMhlanga Hospital in a serious condition.
Joseph Mabuza spokesperson for the department of community safety said the bakkie was transporting 10 people from a church ceremony.
“Three family members, a father, who was also driving the vehicle, his wife and son passed away in this accident. It occurred 1km from the Kwaggafontein Plaza towards Marble Hall,” said Mabuza.
He said the second accident happened about 3km from the first one on the same road, near the Kwaggafontein filling station and it involved two vehicles in a head-on collision on Sunday.
“The driver of a sedan that was travelling towards Marble Hall tried to overtake another vehicle when his car collided with an oncoming car.
“Both drivers and a passenger were fatally wounded on the spot, while two other people later died at KwaMhlanga Hospital.
“Three other people were seriously injured and are receiving medical treatment at the hospital,” said Mabuza.
