The labour broking system must be banned in South Africa, Cosatu said on Saturday.

"We want a total ban of the system," the Congress of SA Trade Unions secretary general Zwelinzima Vavi said.

Vavi was speaking at the regional congress of the National Union of Metal workers SA (Numsa) in Tshepisong near Roodepoort on the West Rand.

He told workers there was a different view of labour broking between the federation and government.

"Government wants labour broking regulators, while we want it banned."

He explained that government was of the view that labour broking should be allowed for the first six months of employment.

"Cosatu does not want to see even one day of labour broking," he said to the applause of the crowd.

He called on workers to join a protest march on Tuesday.

The march would be against labour broking and the Gauteng e-tolling system.

"In no time everyone will be paying for the use of public roads."

Vavi said the e-toll system was equal to the privatisation of roads.

He said that it was not true that only the elite were driving on the highways.
